He manages to track down the man hired by the would-be assassin, only to have him turn out to be an undercover police officer at the time of the incident. McCall is about to be arrested, when he is rescued by friend and fellow "soldier" Susan Plummer. McCall's last mission was not disclosed to the public. The CIA agents who employed McCall are revealed after Susan steals a file from her employer, David Estes (Melissa Leo), which contains information about the mission. McCall is given assistance by his friend Miles Whittaker (John Goodman), who plays a major role in McCall's cases. Other friends of McCall include restaurant owner Louie (Bill Pullman) and bus driver Marvin (Robert John Burke). McCall occasionally works with Beth (Chloë Grace Moretz), who is hired by David's wife Sarah (Melissa Leo) to spy on McCall. Estes also hires martial arts expert Alejandro Saiz (Pedro Pascal) to help protect the President. Estes' son Ethan (Milo Ventimiglia) is revealed to be working with McCall, but after Estes catches him trying to steal classified documents, he orders Saiz to kill them both. During a fight at the restaurant, the team accidentally kills the assassin before they can get him out of the building. When he returns home, McCall is ambushed by soldiers working for Estes. He manages to get away from them and to his friends' house for help. When Saiz arrives, he informs the team that Ethan was killed by Susan's husband Nick (David Harbour). After paying their respects at the funeral, McCall decides to track down the men responsible for Ethan's death. He gets a lead from a file Susan took from Estes' office concerning a con man named "The Russian" (Omar Epps).
